The sleepy city known as Jaisalmer is situated in the picturesque Thar Desert and has transformed itself into a major tourist destination. Appearing like a sandcastle rising from the sandy plains, the fort of Jaisalmer, made of sand stones known locally as as Sonar Quila, is a magnificent sight to behold. Like a scene from the Arabian Nights, ninety-nine bastions circle around the fort’s twisting lanes.
Within the fort, you will find a royal palace, shops swaddled in bright embroideries, and numerous businesses. The locals, wearing voluminous red and orange turbans clearly outnumber foreigners in the bazaar, but this is still one of India’s most popular destinations. The old city below is carved out of the same honey coloured sandstone used to build the fort which has resulted in this destination being affectionately known as The Golden City.
