This small, overgrown village is best known for its two picturesque lakes which grace the centre of town. Notably cooler than the rest of Cambodia, Sen Monorom is a great place to escape the heat of other cities. Be sure to bring warm clothing to protect yourself from the cool evenings. Surrounded by even smaller villages Sen Monorom has become a trading hub in Cambodia and while there you’ll see local Bunong people bringing their goods to town to trade in their distinctive baskets that are carried upon their backs.
The lush tropical jungle and fertile soils of the Mondulkiri region have become known across Cambodia and with tourists as reminiscent of high-altitude cities in America. The rustic charm of the small, shop lined main street and downtown is only a bonus as you get to know the friendly local people. Be sure to get to know the traditional culture of the Bunong people, a tribe that has been pushed to the fringes by the more numerous Khmer people. To give you an idea of how recently Sen Monorom was opened to tourists, the first street lights were introduced to the town in January 2012. This town is one of the least touristed places in Cambodia, which is great for those looking for the next great place to visit before the crowds.
