Destination Overview

Holidays to Takayama take you to a picturesque town with one of the three most beautiful festivals in Japan. Takayama is a city in the mountainous Hida region of Gifu Prefecture.

To differentiate it from other places named Takayama, the city is also commonly referred to as Hida-Takayama. Located in northern Gifu Prefecture, Takayama holidays are most famous for the Sanno-machi Historic District and the biannual Takayama Festival, which has been designated as one of Japan’s most beautiful festivals. During the festival, intricately crafted festival floats are displayed in the city.   The floats themselves are testament to the region’s history and are a chance to see the culmination of hundred’s of years worth of artistry and craftsmanship. The Takayama Festival is held in the spring and fall every year and is attended by thousands of visitors from all over Japan and the world.A holiday in Takayama allows visitors to experience an area with a traditional touch like few other Japanese cities, especially in its beautifully preserved old town. Holidays in Takayama now rank as one of the prime candidates among travellers wishing to add a rural element into their itineraries on a Japan holiday.Holidays to Takayama also provide an opportunity to ski. There are many skiing resorts in the Takayama area, which are open during the winter months.   The nearby mountains, such as Mt. Norikura are popular for sightseeing and trekking. Additionally the World Heritage Site Shirakawa-go is just a 50 minute bus ride away.Takayama gained importance as a source of high quality timber and highly skilled carpenters during the feudal ages. The city was consequently put under direct control of the shogun and enjoyed quite a bit of prosperity considering its remote mountain location.

Takayama

Takayama lazily rubs the sleep out of its eyes twice a year for elaborate festivals held every April and October.

During the festivals, thousands of tourists from across Japan and around the world cram into the town’s normally quiet streets. The festival days are busy and beautiful, but they’re not necessarily the best time to appreciate Takayama itself. Some say that a lot of Takayama’s gentle charm is smothered by all the crowds and excitement.Takayama’s spring and autumn festivals unofficially mark cycles of activity and hibernation. Spring arrives a little later in Takayama compared to many other parts of Japan, with the snow beginning to melt and temperatures beginning to heat up towards the end of March. Thus, the Spring Festival in April signals the start of the lively spring and summer months: There are cherry blossoms in the spring, lavender in the summer, outdoor flea markets on Sundays, and generally rampant hiking, biking, and strolling. Autumn, which lasts from around September-November, is another fantastic time to be in Takayama. The weather is cooler compared to the humid summer months, and koyo (autumn leaf) viewings are almost as big a deal in Japan as cherry blossoms.Winter begins to set in around the time of the Autumn Festival in October, making this festival Takayama’s last big party before everyone hunkers down for the winter.  Buried in the Japanese Alps, Takayama’s winters are long, snowy and quite cold. That said, winter in Takayama is a lot prettier than the grey winters of many other countries. In Takayama, the winter weather is generally clear and blue-skied, so the town ends up looking like the inside of a lovely Japanese snow globe.
