The Backwaters of Kerala

This is a land where little has changed in 50 years and a place where rural Keralan lifestyles live on- something which has long fascinated visitors. Whilst you may see the occasional satellite dish, motorised houseboat or construction a new glass guesthouse, a more common sight here is of ferrymen carrying villagers on tiny canoes. This destination has not been seduced by the way of the outside world and as a result you will see women in vivid saris wash clothes on stone boulders at the edge of the water and children in bright school whites running exuberantly along the banks.

Kettuvallam boats were traditionally used to transport rice from the paddy fields to market towns. These beautiful vessels made of wood, coir, rattan, and bamboo have become a firm favourite from visitors on holiday in Kerala’s backwaters. Having been adapted into houseboats, the Kettuvallam feel like stylishly furnished floating cottages. It's possible to spend from a little as half a day to over a week on a Kettuvallam houseboat, although  trips ranging from 2 to 3 days are the most popular. As you cruise down the waterways, you will enjoy the sight of pastel-colored houses, churches and temple. When it is time to dock for the night, you can stretch your legs gazing at the stars and listen to the sizzle of freshly caught fish roasting on the grill.
