Williamsburg was Virginia’s capital between 1699 and 1780, before Richmond and after Jamestown. Although Williamsburg has not been important politically for a long time, it has become the Commonwealth’s crown jewel ever since Colonial Williamsburg was established to represent it during its glory period.
Outside its restored area is a modern city with an abundance of lodging and dining options, as well as attractions that include a big water park and outlet shops. Nonetheless, the biggest draw for a holiday to Virginia remains the opportunity to time-travel into an era of tri-cornered hats through the Revolutionary City programs that are a must-see. These are excellent re-enactments that link the human rights issues of the colonial period in Virginia, to those that modern Americans face.
