Recreation

La Maison d Ambre is a 3-minute walk from the Old Market and a 5-minute walk from the Central Market. The Royal Palace and Rachana National Museum are a 10-minute walk away. It is about 11 km from Phnom Penh International Airport.

The Wat Phnom

Wat Phnom, or “Hill Temple,” is built upon an artificial hill about 100′ high. It is here that the city of Phnom Penh (“Penh’s Hill”) was founded in 1373. Shrines and other buildings have been put up and restored several times since then, the last major restoration taking place in 1926. The main (east) entrance, shown here, is guarded by modern statues that depict dvarapalas, chinthes, and nagas.

The Central Market

In Cambodian called Psar Thmei, is a 1930s Art Deco covered market near the Riverfront (Sisowath Quay) district. The market is well set out, and sells everything from flowers to video games. The market has recently been beautifully renovated, and is now worth a trip just to admire its architecture.

The National Museum

Contains an excellent collection of art from Cambodia’s “golden age” of Angkor, and a lovely courtyard at the center. A main attraction is the statue of King Jayavarman VII (1181-1219) in mediation pose; other exhibits worth seeing include graceful statues of Hindu gods, ancient stelae (tablets) inscribed in Sanskrit and Old Khmer, and artefacts from a prehistoric burial site.

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace in Phnom Penh was constructed over a century ago to serve as the residence of the King of Cambodia, his family and foreign dignitaries, as a venue for the performance of court ceremony and ritual and as a symbol of the Kingdom. It serves to this day as the Cambodian home of King Norodom Sihamoni and former King Norodom Sihanouk. The Royal Palace complex and attached ‘Silver Pagoda’ compound consist of several buildings, structures and gardens all located within 500×800 meter walled grounds overlooking a riverfront park. Marking the approach to the Palace, the high sculpted wall and golden spired Chanchhaya Pavilion stand distinctively against the riverfront skyline.
