Overview

Visit the various settings of the series, such as those breathtaking places where the “North of the Wall” scenes were filmed. You will be captivated by tales of the “Seven Kingdoms” by local guide Jon Thor Benediktsson, who was a guide for the Game of Thrones crew during the filming of the third season. That trip was the second time the Game of Thrones crew had filmed in Iceland, so they knew what to expect. The crew returned to Iceland in mid January 2017, as parts of season 7 were filmed there. Season 7 aired in the summer of 2017 and many scenes were shot in Iceland. You can visit these location and experience the land beyond the Wall for yourself.Game Of Thrones has brought great magic and adventure to Iceland since it was first released in 2011, whether it be dragons destroying goats, or Iceland’s own Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson playing “The Mountain.”

Highlights: Reykjavik Hallgrimskirkja Perlan Laugardalur

Upon landing in Iceland, there is only the mysterious lava plain of the Reykjanes Peninsula standing between you and the buzz from the energetic capital city of Reykjavik. The ride across the barren lava takes little less than an hour and is thankfully devoid of any demons, making the start of your journey as safe as possible (airport transfer not included in package price).

The first settler of Iceland built his farm on the peninsula where Reykjavik stands today, and the city derives its name after the columns of steam that rose from the hot springs in the area (Reykjavik means “smoky bay”).

Only a few minutes’ drive away from your modern Reykjavik hotel, the city center awaits with abundance of restaurants, cafés, clubs, and cultural events. We recommend a northern lights hunt  (if visiting between mid-September and mid-April), whether by boat, bus, or jeep.
Overnight in Reykjavik.

Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura

Inside Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura, you will find a warm and inviting atmosphere, filled with thoughtful details inspired by the beautiful nature that surrounds the property. This is no cookie-cutter hotel. Reykjavik Natura embraces its legacy - its distinctly Icelandic roots, including works from local artists, the freshest local produce at Satt Restaurant and Natura Spa with its warm relaxing atmosphere.

Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura is also the perfect location for those who love nature and the outdoors. Located in one of the greenest areas in Reykjavik, you can enjoy access to expansive stretches of biking, running and walking trails as well as pathways. Reykjavik's own Nautholsvik Geothermal beach area and the famous Perlan are also closeby. The buzzing city center is within easy reach; just a few minutes away by car or bus or approximately a 20-minute walk.

Highlights: Akureyri Nonni House The Christmas Garden Akureyri Folk Museum

After a hearty breakfast, your journey takes you to the Reykjavik domestic airport where you’ll board a 60-minute flight to the beautiful town of Akureyri. Transfer to the airport on your own.

Often referred to as the “Capital of the North”, Akureyri is the largest town in the north of Iceland and is the second largest urban area in Iceland with a population of a little less than 20,000 residents

Located only 60 kilometers (19 miles) from the Arctic Circle, the mountains in the area are often capped with snow year-round, and in the winter they offer some of the best skiing in the country.

It would be perfect to add a Northern Lights tour  in the Akureyri area if you are visiting during winter months.

The rest of the day is open for your own activities.  Akureyri has great museums, one of Iceland’s best geothermal swimming pools, and a lively art, coffee house and dining scene.  If you enjoy outdoor activities we can suggest and help you book day tours with horseback riding, whale watching and snowmobiling.

Optional (at extra cost): Northern Lights tour (during winter)

Icelandair Hotel Akureyri

Property Location
In the heart of Akureyri, Icelandair Hotel Akureyri is close to Akureyri Botanical Garden and Akureyri Church. This ski hotel is within close proximity of University of Akureyri and Jon Sveinsson Museum.

Highlights: Godafoss Myvatn Dimmuborgir Hverfjall

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today you will be entering the otherworldly landscapes of Lake Myvatn where the scenes for “North of the Wall” were filmed.

As the majestic Waterfall of the Gods, Godafoss, greets you, you’ll quickly realize why the Game of Thrones production crew were drawn to this location. According to the Icelandic Sagas, the waterfall takes its name from the chieftain Thorgeir of Ljosavatn throwing his statues of the heathen gods into the falls when Iceland converted to Christianity in the year 1000.

Your next stop will be the magical places where several scenes for Game of Thrones were filmed. Here you can try to relive the action in the locations seen in the series.

Hopefully you won’t encounter any White Walkers, but Iceland’s rich folklore lets the storytelling guide boost your imagination with tales of trolls and Hidden People alongside curious facts from behind the scenes of Game of Thrones.

After a day of beautiful waterfalls, volcanoes, unusual lava rock formations, steaming hot springs, bubbling mud pools and mysterious landscapes, you’ll end the day with a splash at the Myvatn Nature Baths. While not a filming location for Game of Thrones, the calming waters will still relax you while you imagine being surrounded by other Free Folk.
